New Milford, Dumont chiefs declare curfew in wake of luring reports, South Jersey girl’s murder

The New Milford and Dumont police chiefs this afternoon announced an 8 p.m. curfew in their towns on Mischief Night and Halloween, Oct. 30 and 31, citing “recent luring attempts in New Milford and throughout northern New jersey, an ongoing event in Bergenfield, and the horrific events unfolding today in southern New Jersey.”

Everyone under 18 must be either off the streets of those towns or accompanied by an adults those nights after 8, New Milford Police Chief Frank Papapietro said.

“With Halloween approaching ,the possibility of large numbers of children on the streets creates too rich a target environment for pedophiles, especially given current events throughout the area,” he said.

The New Milford and Dumont curfew conditions:

·         Children and teens under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult at least 21 yrs. of age or older after 8:00 pm.

·         Those found without an adult escort after 8:00 pm will be brought to New Milford Police HQ where an adult over 21 yrs. of age will be contacted to take custody.

“I fully regret having to implement such measures, but as the safety of the Borough’s children is in our hands, to ignore recent events would display an unpardonable  lack of judgment on our part,” Papapietro said.

” We are requesting that parents be especially vigilant over their children while trick or treating and report suspicious activity immediately to your local police department,” he added.
