Originally from Bergenfield, the highly-respected father of three worked for the NYPD before transferring to New Milford in 1994.
Long, 46, battled the disease valiantly, returning to work, before succumbing to aggressive renal cell carcinoma around noon Tuesday, , a few days short of a special benefit concert for his family sponsored by VFW posts from Bergenfield and Bogota.
“Brian is an awesome person, officer and father,” Bogota Sgt. Geoffrey Cole told CLIFFVIEW PILOT last year. “He would do anything for anyone.”
The Brian Long Fund over the past 30 months has raised nearly $90,000 to help defray his family’s medical costs and other expenses.
These included frequent bio-therapy treatments for the uncommon, aggressive cancer at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Portions of the proceeds from the June 11 benefit -- staged at Ralph Hall VFW Post #5562 in Bogota and co-produced by Bergenfield VFW Post #6467 -- will go to help the Long family.
It include performances by London Calling, playing songs from the Beatles and That 60’s Band, performing 60s and 70s hits.
