Police zeroed in on John Bigger, a 57-year-old retired Hudson County Prosecutor's Office detective sergeant, after Borough Administrator Christine Demiris reported a shortfall in late February for the 2016 year, Detective Sgt. Kevin Van Saders said.

They found that Bigger -- who currently sits on the borough Board of Education -- "failed to make deposits of a portion of the recreation registration funds" in cash and checks for summer camp and other youth activities, Van Saders said.

An undisclosed portion of the funds "were located and recovered" during the investigation, which produced charges against Bigger of misapplication of entrusted property and property of government or financial institutions, the sergeant said.

Van Saders didn't say where authorities believe Bigger steered the money.

They issued him a summons to answer the charges in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack on May 10.
