Alejandro Gonzalez, 24, was being held on $40,500 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and weapons possession, records show.

Officer Joseph Arrigo was on patrol around 3 a.m. Sunday when he “came upon an altercation” on Portland Avenue at West Clinton, Capt. Cathy Madalone said.

Arrigo “immediately turned on his emergency lights and sirens and requested additional units respond to the area for assistance,” after which officers “defused the situation,” Madalone said.

They learned that what began as yelling got violent, she said.

One victim had minor scratches and abrasions from the belt and the other a head cut from the brick, the captain said. One was taken to the hospital, while the other refused medical attention, she said.
