They were joined this year by previously-unranked Dumont.

Bergenfield fell to No. 38 in the rankings compiled by Safewise.com. It was No. 56 last year.

New Milford dipped to No. 46 from No. 39 the year before.

Dumont made an impressive entry at No. 56.

Safewise.com calls Bergenfield "rich and diverse."

The website cites the "Helping Hand Program," which it said "establishes one household in every neighborhood to act as a place where kids can go if they're being bullied or are hurt."

Safewise.com says New Milford "has set itself apart for its low crime records and because of its priorities to protect the health of its citizens. The health department provides uninsured residents with immunizations for their entire families and cancer screenings for women."

Dumont, meanwhile, has a police department that "puts in...hard work to keep residents safe," it says. "Aside from crime prevention tips posted on Dumont's website, the police works with local schools to promote G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training) to keep kids out of trouble."

Safewise compiled crime statistics from the FBI and conducted its own research on public safety public health, and educational offerings to determine its rankings.
