Both the pedestrian and the dog were in serious condition -- the 48-year-old man with head trauma -- after the 9 p.m. crash Thursday in a crosswalk at the corner of Washington & Virginia Avenues, they said.

The Dumont Volunteer Ambulance Corps took the man to Hackensack University Medical Center. Englewood Hospital and Medical Center ALS also responded.

Meanwhile, a Dumont resident took the chocolate Labrador to the Oradell Animal Hospital in Paramus, responders said.

Charges were pending against the driver, who police said left the scene but returned.
