Bergenfield Police Say Texting Driver With Pot Resisted Arrest

BERGENFIELD, N.J. -- Bergenfield police said a 22-year-old borough man fought with officers trying to arrest hm after they found pot in his car.

Esteban Perez was texting while driving when officers pulled him over at West Main and Front streets just before 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, Capt. Mustafa Rabboh said Friday morning.

They searched him after smelling marijuana and found Perez carrying a glass pipe and a large glass jar of pot under the driver's seat, Rabboh said.

As he was being handcuffed, Perez "began to resist the arrest, at which time necessary force was used by the officers," he said.

Perez was released pending an April 20 court date on charges of having marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Officers also gave him a summons for driving while using a using a cellphone.
