Bergenfield Police Chase Dumont Man After Attempted Traffic Stop

BERGENFIELD, N.J. -- A Dumont man jumped out of his car and fled into nearby backyards after Bergenfield police trid to stop him for a traffic violation, authorities said Tuesday.

Joseph Billera, 31, was released on a court summonses charging him with resisting arrest, obstruction and illegal possession of a prescription drug, Capt. Mustafa Rabboh said.

Officers tried stopping the car after spotting it in the area of Phelps Avenue and Chestnut Street just after 3:30 a.m. Saturday, Rabboh said.

Billera then "pulled into his driveway, exited his vehicle, and fled on foot," the captain said.

Although he got away through several backyards, Billera was caught a short time after police from Bergenfield and Dumont set up a perimeter, he said.

In addition to the criminal charges, Billera recived summonses for failing to stop or yield, improper headlighti maintenance and failing to exhibit registration or insurance.
