Officer Christopher Brugger spotted Harry C. Allen recklessly driving a black Chevy in the area of Sylvan Avenue and Beechwood Street just before 1:30 a.m. Saturday, Capt. Mustafa Rabboh said.
Brugger tried to pull him over, but Allen continued south on South Washington Avenue into Teaneck, Rabboh said.
The officer cut off the chase "due to the high rate of speed of the fleeing vehicle and the potential for injury," the captain said.
Soon after, the Chevy hit another car on Teaneck Road, he said.
Brugger responded, along with the Teaneck Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and grabbed Allen as he tried to tip away, Rabboh said.
Allen -- who was wanted out of Englewood for a January arrest for driving while on the suspended list -- tossed a Newport cigarette pack, which was later found to contain marijuana, he said.
Allen was taken to Holy Name Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries before being transferred to the Bergen County Jail.
He remained held there on $25,000 bail Monday, charged with eluding and drug possession. Allen also received several traffic summonses, the captain said.
Authorities also found an outstanding no-bail warrant out of Columbia, S.C. for illegal use of credit cards, he said.
"The condition of the driver of the vehicle that was struck is unknown at this time," Rabboh said Monday morning, "but any injuries are not considered life-threatening."
