New Milford police arrested Sarju Patel, 32, at his home with help from Bergenfield police, Detectives Sgt. Kevin Van Saders said.

Patel approached the teller at the Shell station on River Road just before 7:30 a.m. and demanded money, Van Saders said.

"The gas attendant retreated to his booth and [Patel] continued to go after him for money," the sergeant said. "After an unsuccessful attempt to take money from the attendant, [he] fled the scene in his vehicle."

A judge ordered Patel held in the Bergen County pending a bail hearing on robbery charges.
