Stephen Stanzione, 51, “planned on plying her with alcohol in an attempt to have sex with her,” Detective Capt. Timothy Torell told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
Before police caught him, Stanzione approached three other women — two of whom he believed were in their mid-teens — with the same intent, the captain added.
The 18-year-old woman called police the afternoon of April 24, saying that Stanzione pulled up on Knickerbocker Road as she walked near Dwight Morrow High School and asked her to get into his red mid-2000 Chevy Malibu. School was in recess that week.
The woman dashed onto the school’s campus and dialed 911.
“She was awesome,” Torell said. “She got away from him quickly, called us right away and gave our officers a thorough description of him and the vehicle he was driving.”
City Detective Sgt. Christopher Kedersha and Detective Christopher Quirk hit the area in an unmarked car.
“These are the kinds of calls that send shivers up your back,” Torell said. “Cops are no different than anyone else.”
Kedersha and Quirk spotted the car on Tenafly Road and stopped it a short time later.
The detectives soon learned that Stanzione “intentionally was in the area because of Dwight Morrow High School and the Janis E. Dismus Middle School,” the captain said.
The 5-foot-4-inch, 150-pound Stanzione remained held on $150,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with harassment and luring.
Meanwhile, Englewood police have been contacting their colleagues throughout New Jersey and New York to see whether Stanzione might be connected to similar crimes elsewhere.
They ask that anyone with information about the incident, or other possible luring attempts, call the city Detective Bureau: (201) 568-4875.
Torell said they also hope the other three women who investigators believe Stanzione approached come forward.
The captain praised the caller, “who was truly courageous in her actions,” as well as Kedersha and Quirk, who he said “accomplished exactly what we set out to do — pure dedicated service to our citizens.
“They should be all commended.”
