Bergenfield Firefighters Quickly Knock Blaze

BERGENFIELD, N.J. -- Bergenfield authorities were trying to determine what sparked a series of spot fires in a combined commercial and residential building Friday night.

Several callers reported a fire on the roof of the Chapala Grill at 52 South Washington Avenue just before 7:30 pm., Police Chief Cathy Madalone said.

Everyone in the business was evacuated, along with the tenants living above, she said.

Washington Avenue was closed in both directions while the roof was vented and several upstairs windows broken to help extinguish the blaze, the chief said.

The restaurant wasn't damaged and tenants were allowed to return once the blaze was out, Madalone said.

No injuries were reported.

Washington Avenue was reopened just before 9 p.m.
