Ottavio Martin Bertolini, 96, Dumont Resident

BERGENFIELD, N.J. – Ottavio Martin Bertolini, formerly of Dumont, died Monday, March 14 at Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel, N.Y.. He was 96.

He was born in Weaver, W.Va., to Carola (Bertolli) and Antonio Bertolini. Later, his family moved to the Bronx. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in the Pacific Theater as a medic during World War II. He saw action at the Battle of Luzon and other islands in the South Pacific. He was employed at Stella D’Oro, Bronx, and Phelps Dodge in Yonkers, N.Y. 

After retiring, he and his wife, Rose, moved to Pine Bush, N.Y., where he indulged in a few of his favorite hobbies, such as vegetable gardening and baking. In 2005, his wife died after 57 years of marriage. He lived the last 10 years of his life in Dumont with the support of Roz and Bob Callahan, Kathy, Julie and Mike Lisa, and Maureen and Gary Buchheister, and their children, Kyle, Lindsey and Shannon.

He was the father of Charles (Lizabeth), Jo Ann Del Brocco (Mario) and James (Marika); grandfather of Jessica Quartarano (Nicholas), Christopher, Alicia DeLuca (Richard) and Tara; great-grandfather of Anthony Joseph Quartarano; brother-in-law of Rosalia and Robert Callahan; and uncle to Kathleen Lisa (Michael), Maureen Buchheister (Gary), Edward Bertolini (Geraldine), Salvatore Bertolini (Terri), Pauline La Pietro, Peter Bertolini, Janet Berberich (Michael), Donna Carames (Anthony) and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Rose L. Bertolini (Bisogno); brothers, John (Millie) and Peter (Gloria); sisters, Margaret La Pietro (Charlie) and Mary; and nieces Carol Ruggiero and her husband, Joseph, and Linda.

Visiting hours will take place from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Frech-McKnight Funeral Home, 161 Washington Ave., Dumont. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Dumont. Interment, with military honors, will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, N.Y.
