Former Dumont Mayor John Eckel, 74

DUMONT, N.J. -- Former Dumont Mayor John “Jack” Eckel died Wednesday at Care One at Valley in Westwood. He was 74.

Eckel was born in Jersey City to Elizabeth and Theodore Eckel. 

He was mayor of Dumont from 1980-83 and past president of the Dumont Board of Education. He also served as the borough administrator before his retirement. 

Eckel was also a former member of the Shade Tree Commission and Clean Communities Committee. 

He was predeceased by his wife Marie and their son Gregory (2003). 

He leaves a daughter, Laura, and her spouse Joanne Piccininni; two sons, John Jr. and Theodore Eckel; grandchildren, Denise Marinaro and her husband Michael, Stephanie Magnotta and her husband Jesse, Gregory Eckel, Brianna Eckel, John Eckel III and Stephen Ingram; and great-granddaughter, Haiden Magnotta. 

There will be a funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s R.C. Church, 280 Washington Ave., Dumont. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dumont Volunteer Ambulance Corps or the Dumont Volunteer Fire Department.
