The commission recently tried to start a community garden for New Milford but found a general lack of interest, longtime member Lauren Maehrlein said. The members wanted other residents to help run it but could not find enough participants, Maehrlein said.
In the meantime, the commission will turn its attention to keeping the borough clean.
"We're always trying to find ways to reduce trash," Maehrlein told Daily Voice. "It's needed unfortunately. We really wish people would be more thoughtful of where they dispose of their trash."
Maehrlein said their main focus now will be reducing plastic bag usage. She said there are too many that are thrown out and clog waterways.
The commission will also pay attention to water runoff and upkeep, she said.
Last month the volunteers held a community clean day which Maehrlein said had a good turnout.
As for the garden, she said it's on the back burner for now. The commission also needed to find a good location for it on top of volunteers to help, Maehrlein said.
The initiative could be revisited at some point though, she continued,
"We may come around in the spring and find we have more interest or a place has become available," she said. "I would never say never."
