Bergenfield Crossing Guard Thankful For Prayers Of Community

BERGENFIELD, N.J. -- Jo Ann Hans returned home last week for the first time since she was struck by a car while working as a crossing guard outside a Bergenfield synagogue, according NorthJersey.com.

The accident left her in critical condition and would have killed her, she said, if not for the prayers of the community, according NorthJersey.com.

On Sept. 15, Hans was helping some of more than 1,000 worshippers making their way to Rosh Hashana services at Congregation Beth Abraham, an Orthodox synagogue at New Bridge Road when the driver of a Honda Civic crashed into her. Three of her vertebrae were fractured, and she suffered severe head trauma, said NorthJersey.com.

Hans, 60, spent 10 days at Hackensack University Medical Center and almost two weeks at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in Saddle Brook, NorthJersey.com added.

Now at home, she refers to herself as “just a crossing guard,” and said she is astonished by the response from the public with prayers and donations, NorthJersey.com reported.

She credits the thoughts and prayers with helping to save her life, NorthJersey.com said.
