Tully was recently re-elected to his third term on the Bergenfield council.
He is the oldest of two children whose parents — Philomena and Peter Tully — were born in Ireland.
Tully graduated from Northeastern University and served as an aide to Sen. Frank Lautenberg, Gov. Richard Codey, and former Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle.
The council president said he has always taken pride in his family and Irish heritage.
"I was raised to value church, charity, and my community which I have brought to my work as a councilman over the past seven years," Tully told Irish American Democrats. "My constituents are diverse, but they relate to the same values that I was brought up with."
Irish American Democrats, founded in 1996, works with the White House, current members of the Senate and U.S. House of Representatives, in support of continued U.S. involvement in the Irish peace process, its website states.
