The equinox means approximately equal time of both day and night. From now until the end of the season, Dec. 21, days will grow steadily shorter and temperatures will continue to fall.
Before the 1600s the season was primarily known as a time for harvest. While many countries, including the United Kingdom, prefer the term Autumn, the most common term state-side is Fall, which derives from the Old English word feallan, according to Business Insider.
