A lifelong New Jersey resident, Fowler was born in Jersey City and has lived in Rutherford, Teaneck, Hawthorne and Glen Rock before settling in New Milford in 2000.
The two-time Tony Award nominee is known mainly for Broadway musical theatre. She has been in A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd (in which she portrayed Mrs. Lovett), Beauty and the Beast, Bells Are Ringing, and The Boy from Oz.
She was nominated for the Tony Awards, as Best Featured Actress in a Musical for The Boy From Oz and as Best Actress in a Musical for Sweeney Todd as Mrs. Lovett, which garnered her a Drama Desk Award nomination as well.
She has also appeared in films, including Sister Act and Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit; and Mulan, in which she sang "Honor to Us All". She has also appeared in television including Law & Order, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Ed, and Gossip Girl. She currently appears as Sister Jane Ingalls in the Netflix comedy-drama series, Orange Is the New Black, and with the cast, received a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.
