Dr. Ogden has been a member of the Valley medical staff since 2008 and focuses almost exclusively on performing minimally invasive spine (MIS) surgery. MIS surgery is performed through small diameter tubes inserted through small incisions. Advanced imaging is often used to guide surgeons through the area, enabling them to perform complex surgeries in a minimally invasive way with a high degree of precision and accuracy. For many common procedures, patients go home the same day or the following day.

“Minimally invasive spine surgery offers patients many benefits, including smaller incisions; less disruption of muscles and other soft tissue; reduced post-operative pain; lower infection rates; less need for blood transfusions; and ultimately a faster recovery than traditional spine surgery,” says Dr. Ogden, who is nationally recognized for his techniques in MIS surgery. “MIS surgery benefits active patients, as well as older adults who might not be candidates for traditional surgery due to their other medical conditions.”

A graduate of the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, Dr. Ogden completed his neurosurgery residency at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center and his fellowship in minimally invasive spine surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

At the Spine Center, Dr. Ogden treats adults of all ages and older adolescents. A multidisciplinary approach to spine care begins with a comprehensive evaluation that examines each patient’s unique medical condition and overall health status. Some of the medical conditions that can be treated by MIS surgery include:

  •  Herniated discs
  •  Spinal stenosis
  •  Spinal instability
  •  Spinal tumors
  •  Spondylolisthesis
  •  Compression fractures

“We often start with a conservative approach that might include medication, core- strengthening exercises, and behavior modification,” says Dr. Ogden. “If surgery is the best treatment, patients are often relieved to learn that spine surgery has undergone many advances over the past decade and is not to be feared as perhaps it once was.

Not everyone is a candidate for minimally invasive spine surgery. Surgery is either not necessary or of questionable benefit for many patients. For some patients who need surgery, a more traditional, open approach is better.

Following surgery, patients are advised to follow a lifetime spine care plan, which might include regular core-strengthening exercises, avoidance of high impact activities, and lifestyle changes, such as weight loss and smoking cessation.
