Bergenfield's Grand & Essex, known for its flavors from the "old neighborhood," offers the following tried and true recipe for Rosh Hashanah.
Bubby Ida’s Flanken Cabbage Soup
- 1.5 lbs Flanken
- 15 oz can pinapple chunks, drained
- 2 medium onions, diced
- ½ - 1 cup raisins
- ½ - ¾ cup honey or brown sugar
- 1 medium cabbage, shredded
- 16 oz can whole tomatoes
- 16 oz can tomato sauce
- 1 cup water
- Salt/pepper to taste
Place water and flanken in pot and bring to boil, then simmer for 20 minutes. Skim off fat and add remaining ingredients. Cover and simmer on low for two hours.
