Artists were invited to paint the pumpkins and submit them from Oct. 19 - 24 in favorite children’s book characters.

The library had a few restrictions -- including no carved pumpkins so that children would avoid knives. Otherwise, according to library director Catherine DeLeo, crafty residents were invited to use hot glue, paint, or a variety of decorations in depicting their favorite characters.

Judging was conducted online by residents or in person at the library during the event. The pumpkins’ artists remained anonymous with no markings or signatures permitted. But dozens of readers had to fill in forms listing the book that they read and, to encourage literacy amongst the borough.

The first place prize winner will receive a $100 gift certificate to Amazon.com, and second place prize winners will receive a $35 certificate before Halloween activities begin. All who are participating were asked to pick up the pumpkins by Nov. 2. Dozens remained on display.
