The campaign seeks $50 donations from the participants and any civilians who agree to sponsor them.

Proceeds will go to cancer research in honor of former Bergenfield Detective Kenneth Otto, who died in 2005 from pancreatic cancer.

"Kenny was a great friend and a great officer," Bergenfield Police Chief Cathy Madalone said. "I wanted to take this opportunity to honor his memory."

Madalone will be relaxing the facial hair policy for participating department members.

"The sad truth is that so many lives are affected by cancer," she said.

Each day, 22,000 people die of cancer, according to the World Health Organization

No-Shave November aims to grow awareness by embracing hair, which many cancer patients lose.
