BERGENFIELD, N.J. -- New Jersey Assemblywomen Valerie Vainieri Huttle and Marlene Caride, director and producer of "Hard Hatted Woman" Lorien Barlow, and Becton Dickinson and Suez volunteers joined Habitat for Humanity of Bergen County on May 7, in recognition of National Women Build Week.
The volunteers helped frame and raise walls for the three-bedroom single-family home in Bergenfield, which will be the future home of Habitat Bergen's partner family, Carlos and Geovana Pimentel and their two children. Read more about them here.
NWBW is a weeklong event created by Habitat for Humanity's Women Build program, that challenges women to devote at least one day to help build affordable housing in their local communities. Across the country, more than 17,000 women volunteered on over 650 Habitat construction sites during the week.
The Women Build program recruits, educates and inspires women to build and advocate for simple, decent and affordable homes in their communities. Since its inception in 1998, more than 2,300 homes have been built in partnership with low-income families by Women Build crews.
"Women Build is an extraordinary national and local effort with the mission to empower women in construction while advocating the need for affordable housing. These issues transcend gender barriers, and National Women Build Week brings women and men together as volunteers who lead by example to tackle these issues," said Angela King, Habitat Bergen's director of volunteers and Women Build committee chair.
"'Hard Hatted Woman' is the first feature documentary film about women in blue-collar building trades," its website notes. "Following a handful of tradeswomen through their daily experiences on and off the job, 'Hard Hatted Woman' creates intimate portraits of the women who do this work."
