South Jersey Zoo Closes Bird Exhibit With Plans For New Aviary
The Cape May County Park & Zoo is closing its World of Birds exhibit and shipping the animals to zoos nationwide, authorities said. "With sadness for the present, but excitement for the future, we are announcing that the World of Birds aviary will be permanently closing its doors this spring," the popular facility said Friday, March 31, on Facebook. 30 Swans Dead Of Bird Flu At Jersey Shore Lake: Report
Approximately 30 swans, a duck and a goose died of bird flu at a lake on the Jersey Shore, NJ Advance Media reports. Point Pleasant Beach Mayor Paul Kanitra confirmed the cases of bird flu at Lake of the Lilies, telling the outlet that "the risk of human transmission is low." The mayor urged residents to keep their distance from the area "until it has run its course amongst the swans and geese there." Bird Flu Kills Backyard Flock In NJ
The first case of bird flu killed a backyard flock on the Jersey Shore, NJ Advance Media said. At least 10 ducks have died and an undisclosed number of chickens got sick as a result of the avian influenza outbreak in Monmouth County, the outlet said. While the national outbreak has driven up the price of eggs and chicken, properly cooked foul is harmless to humans even when it's infected by the flu, agriculture experts say.
