Ajay Wiggins, 25, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his mother, 64-year-old Joyce Gaskins, who was found unresponsive last month.

Authorities say that Gaskins was found shortly after 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15 inside a home in the 1600 block of Druid Hill Avenue.

Police arrived at the scene to find Gaskins dead.

Medics confirmed her death, and Wiggins, initially identified as "a family member on the scene," was taken to a hospital for a psychological evaluation and treatment, according to the Baltimore Police Department.

An autopsy performed by the Medical Examiner’s office determined Gaskins’ death was caused by asphyxiation, and it was officially ruled a homicide on Thursday, Dec. 5.

Wiggins was later connected to the crime and taken into custody without incident, investigators said. He was taken to the Central Booking Intake Facility and formally charged with first-degree murder.

Gaskins' death remains under investigation.
