The dog days of summer have brought mosquitos carrying the West Nile Virus to another neighborhood in Maryland. In Prince George's County, the Maryland Department of Agriculture said that mosquitoes have tested positive for the virus in Laurel, following similar reports in different parts of the state. The latest batch of mosquitoes were trapped at the Highpoint Trail and Overlook Way, as well as Oxford Drive and Northlake Court. Despite the county’s best efforts to immunize them against the virus, a pair of raccoons have tested positive for rabies in two separate towns within two days in Anne Arundel County. The Anne Arundel County Department of Health issued alerts this week after confirming cases of rabies in Crownsville and Laurel that were located on Sunday, Nov. 13, and Thursday, Nov. 15. Maryland County To Bait Raccoons Into Getting Vaccinated For Rabies
A program to vaccinate raccoons throughout Anne Arundel County for rabies has begun, officials say. The 2022 Raccoon Oral Rabies Vaccination Project began on Monday, Aug. 29 and is expected to be completed by Sept. 30. The goal is to immunize thousands of wild raccoons by placing approximately 84,500 baits containing the vaccine throughout Anne Arundel County, according to the Anne Arundel County Department of Health. Health Department officials are urging anyone who may have come in contact with suspicious raccoons to seek medical attention after two raccoons who attacked domesticated pets tested positive for rabies in Anne Arundel County, officials say. The first raccoon attacked a pet and was killed by the pet owner near the intersection of Laico Lane and Dock Road in Pasadena.
