Huy Fong Inc. issued an advisory regarding the shortage, which has been plaguing the company - one of the largest producers of Sriracha products in the world - since near the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“As you may recall, on July 24, 2020, we sent out an email to all customers that we have been experiencing a shortage of chili pepper inventory,” the company announced earlier this year. “We had also advised and suggested that your company not ‘promise’ any products to customers unless you have the product in stock.”
Due to weather conditions that are affecting the quality of chili peppers, the company said earlier this year that they “now face a more severe shortage of chili.”
“Unfortunately, this is out of our control, and without this essential ingredient, we are unable to produce any of our products (Chili Garlic, Sambal Oelek, and Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce,” they said.
“We can confirm that there is an unprecedented shortage of our products," the company said in a statement. "We are still endeavoring to resolve this issue that has been caused by several spiraling events, including unexpected crop failure from the spring chili harvest."
In response to the shortage, shipments of Sriracha are being held until after Labor Day in September, with some orders being put on hold temporarily. The company has also ceased accepting any new orders.
“We hope for a fruitful fall season and thank our customers for their patience and continued support during this difficult time,” Huy Fong said.
