John Thomas White III, 20, of Hyattsville, was taken into custody late Tuesday, March 11, following a police pursuit in Waldorf, according to the Charles County Sheriff's Office.

Officers were alerted to a stolen vehicle near Promenade Place and Aldergate Place around 10:45 p.m., authorities said, though when they attempted to stop the driver, White hit the gas and took off, prompting a pursuit.

Deputies deployed stop sticks, disabling the vehicle and forcing White to ditch the car and make a run for it, officials said. He was quickly caught without further incident.

A search of the vehicle uncovered a loaded handgun—reported stolen in Virginia—along with a significant amount of cannabis, investigators said.

White, who is legally prohibited from possessing a firearm, was arrested and charged with:

  • Theft;
  • Illegal possession of a firearm;
  • Illegal possession of ammunition;
  • Loaded handgun in a vehicle;
  • Possession with intent to distribute drugs;
  • Multiple traffic violations.

White is being held without bond at the Charles County Detention Center.

The case remains under investigation.
