William Woodson, 26, of Southeast DC, was indicted on charges of first-degree child cruelty, assault with significant bodily injury against a minor, and an additional felony stemming from a separate adult incident the same day, according to the US Attorney's Office.
The charges stem from a disturbing incident that unfolded around 11:20 a.m. on July 24, 2023, at the Mount Vernon Square Metro station.
According to court documents, the toddler’s mother was walking down the escalator when Woodson approached from behind and — without saying a word — allegedly kicked the child, sending him tumbling down the moving steps.
The boy hit his head and face before landing at the bottom.
Woodson reportedly fled the scene, but the mother gave chase while carrying her injured son and called 911.
Metropolitan Police officers met with the mother nearby, and based on her description, were able to locate and stop Woodson a short distance away.
Medics rushed the child to Children’s Hospital, where he briefly lost consciousness en route. Doctors diagnosed him with a mild concussion and monitored him for about 12 hours before releasing him home.
The US Attorney’s Office said the child had no prior contact with Woodson, and the attack appeared completely unprovoked.
Woodson remains behind bars while the case moves forward in DC Superior Court.
