Maryland Woman Struck Dead In PA ID'd, Coroner Searching For Next Of Kin

A Maryland native has been identifed as a pedestrian who died days after she was struck in Pennsylvania, the York County Coroner's Office announced on Wednesday, Oct. 9.

Ruth "Helen" Emel, 72, originally of Baltimore, most recently of the 300 block of West Market Street York City, died at Wellspan York Hospital at 11:20 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, the coroner explained and as detailed on her social media. 

Emel had been walking in the crosswalk when she was struck by a vehicle that was turning onto W. Market Street from N. Penn Street around 5:19 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 2, the coroner said.

She suffered critical injuries and was taken to WellSpan York Hospital, "where she underwent treatment for approximately three days before she succumbed to her injuries," as stated in the release.

An autopsy was completed at Lehigh Valley Hospital the day she passed but the results are pending until her next of kin has been notified.

The coroner's office is requesting assistance in finding any immediate next of kin.

Her social media shows she is engaged but no family members are listed.
