It happened around 10:24 a.m. at Billingsley Elementary School, where the student reached into their backpack during class to grab a paper, authorities said.
The book bag was on the student’s lap at the time when the gun discharged.
No one was hurt.
A teacher and a nearby school resource officer rushed to the student and recovered the loaded gun from inside the bag.
Investigators said it is not yet clear who owns the gun or how it ended up in the child’s backpack. The sheriff’s office said they are looking into the possibility that it belonged to a visiting relative.
The investigation is ongoing.
