Nor'easter Uncovers Possible 19th-Century Shipwreck Remains A powerful nor'easter uncovered what's believed to be a large piece of a ship that wrecked more than 140 years ago. The storm exposed wooden wreckage along the south shore of Nantucket, Massachusetts, on Saturday, Sept. 26. The remains are believed to be from the Warren Sawyer, a three-masted wooden schooner that sank off the island's coast in December 1884. The discovery was first reported by the Nantucket Current on Saturday, Sept. 26. Jason Graziadei, the newspaper's editor-in-chief, spotted the large wooden beams held together by iron fastenings near Miacomet Beach. …

Talk About A Lucky Deli: Five $50K Maryland Lottery Winners Sold There In The Same Drawing Something was apparently in the sandwiches at one Maryland deli. Five tickets sold at Ollie’s Beer, Wine & Deli in Rockville each hit for $50,000 during the midday Pick 5 drawing on Tuesday, Sept. 22, according to the Maryland Lottery. Same store. Same drawing. Same $50,000 prize. The five tickets each matched the winning number, 88768, in exact order, turning one Montgomery County deli into the source of a combined $250,000 payday. And apparently Pick 5 was just getting warmed up. Five days later, the Sunday, Sept. 27 evening drawing produced 14 more $50,000 winners when 6…

She Went To San Diego To See The Sunsets: Maryland Grad Detained By ICE Far From Home A Maryland college graduate went to California chasing sunsets. She never made it home. Eagla Tilahun, a recent Towson University graduate, was on a graduation trip in San Diego when she was detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to friends who are now raising money to get her back to Maryland. Nearly 3,000 miles from home, Tilahun is now being held at a detention center in a state unfamiliar to her, fundraiser organizer Mahielt Hailu said. The trip was supposed to mark a milestone. Tilahun graduated from Towson in the spring with a degree in public health, accordin…

'For Carson': Maryland Community Turns Lemonade, Ice Cream, Soccer Into Support For Local Boy Western Maryland has found a lot of ways to show Carson Negley just how many people are in his corner. Near Frost Elementary in Frostburg, two boys set up a folding table with a pitcher of lemonade, stacks of plastic cups and a handwritten sign offering drinks for $1. At the bottom were two words. “For Carson.” Will and his friend Alec were raising money for their schoolmate and friend, one small piece of a much larger community response that has taken shape since Carson's family learned earlier this month that his leukemia had returned. The community has stepped up for Carson Neg…

No Way In: Maryland's State Park Nobody Could Visit For Nearly 30 Years May Finally Open Maryland has spent nearly three decades sitting on a state park with one fairly significant problem. Nobody could get into it. That may finally be changing at Wills Mountain State Park, where officials are taking the next steps toward opening more than 800 acres overlooking Cumberland to the public after decades of waiting. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources announced that more than $750,000 is being put toward planning the future of the long-promised park, including a $521,684 federal grant awarded to Frostburg State University. And "long-promised" might be putting it mildly. …
