The officer, whose name has not been released, was attacked around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 13, outside the Wilkens Precinct, when an armed suspect approached and opened fire, Baltimore County Police said.
The officer was rushed to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he remains in surgery.
“This kind of violence is shocking, outrageous, and has no place in Baltimore County,” County Executive Kathrine Klausmeier said, as she joined Police Chief Robert McCullough at the hospital.
McCullough confirmed that the officer was shot in the back parking lot of the precinct and that the department is deeply grateful to the medical team working to save his life.
“Baltimore County Police Department and its members are appreciative of the UM Shock Trauma for all they do for our officers today, in the past, and what we know they’ll do in the future,” McCullough said.
Officials have not released information on the suspect, what led up to the shooting, or whether an arrest has been made.
Maryland Delegate Nino Mangione said his office was briefed on the incident and urged the public to pray for the wounded officer.
“Please pray for this brave officer, his family, and his brave colleagues, who risk their lives for us every day,” Mangione said.
Baltimore County Police have asked the community to keep the officer in their thoughts.
More information is expected to be released.
