A new alert has been issued in Anne Arundel County after a raccoon tested positive for rabies. The county's Department of Health issued an alert on Friday, Nov. 15 advising that a raccoon that was trapped in the area of Seamore Street and Marco Drive in the Cedarwood Cove Community in Pasadena tested positive on Thursday for the virus. It is the second such alert in a week. Rabies is a viral disease that mainly infects mammals (warm-blooded animals who nurse their young) and is spread through the saliva of the infected animal, usually by a bite or scratch, officials said. Maryland Motorcyclist Killed Crashing Into Animal, Police Say (

A motorcyclist was killed early on Sunday morning after crashing into an animal in Prince George's County, police say. At approximately 12:30 a.m. on Oct. 27, officers were called to the 3400 block of Ritchie Marlboro Road in Upper Marlboro, where there was a reported crash. According to the Prince George's County Police Department the rider was traveling along the roadway when he unexpectedly struck the animal. For the third time in as many months, a groundhog has tested positive for rabies in Frederick County in the same neighborhood, this time after getting in a fight with a dog, health officials are cautioning. The Anne Arundel County Department of Health is cautioning that a raccoon found in Davidsonville earlier this week has tested positive for rabies.
