A Tornado Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service for parts of Washington, DC, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia through 9 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 7, as the area is expected to be battered by thunderstorms.
Tornadoes are "likely," according to officials, with storms bringing ping pong-sized hail, and wind gusts approaching 75 mph.
Residents in the area are advised to secure any outdoor items that can turn into potentially dangerous projectiles, stay inside and avoid windows.
"Now is the time to review your severe weather safety procedures for the possibility of dangerous weather today," forecasters said. "While seeking shelter indoors, go to the lowest floor to an interior room. Stay away from windows.
"Those in mobile homes or weaker structures should plan ahead of time to shelter in a stronger shelter," the National Weather Service added. "Be prepared for extended power outages, and the potential for some roads to be blocked by fallen trees."
