The Calvert Marine Museum shared a video of Cody Goddard unearthing a 650-pound Miocene fossil whale skull that was preserved in a block of hardened sediment along the shore of Matoaka Beach, officials shared this week.
The species of the whale skull has not been determined, according to the museum.
Officials say that “transporting the fossil was no easy task,” noting that it took a team of “paleontology enthusiasts” to transport the discovery, first by foot, then by a truck to the Calvert Marine Museum, where it can now be spotted by visitors at the Fossil Prep Lab.
