The Office of the State Fire Marshal is cautioning that a statewide burn ban is in effect after a 94-year-old man was killed in a brush fire they believe started when he was burning trash. Waldorf resident Donald Halter has been identified by investigators as the person believed to have been killed when a blaze broke out near his home and rapidly spread. There will be an increased police presence in Lexington Park following several reported unprovoked assaults, according to the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office. Detectives are investigating three separate reports of assaults that were called in on Wednesday morning on Great Mills Road near St. Mary’s Square and the South Coral Drive areas. A firefighter was injured early on Friday morning after being struck by a vehicle while working at a crash scene on I-495 in Montgomery County, officials say.
