In Prince George's County, two young children died amid a recent rise in flu cases across the state, prompting the Health Department issuing an alert.

The students attended CMIT North Elementary School in Laurel and John Bayne Elementary School in Capitol Heights, according to NBC.

"Our school communities are feeling the impact of a nationwide rise in flu cases, with increasing numbers across the county and outbreaks in several of our schools," Superintendent Millard House II wrote to the community.

"Tragically, we have lost two students.

"Our hearts are with their families and loved ones during this difficult time."

School officials said that they are "prioritizing efforts to minimize the spread and keep students and staff healthy."

They've begun intensifying cleaning and disinfecting efforts, focusing on "high-touch surfaces."

Custodial staff have also increased the frequency of deep cleaning in classrooms, restrooms, and common areas to minimize the spread of germs.

Officials are also monitoring flu-related absences and working with local health officials to monitor flu trends.

They also cautioned that masks could be required in the future if necessary.

"In schools with a significant number of flu cases, temporary masking may be required until the situation improves to help limit transmission," officials said.

"Any temporary mask requirements will be communicated clearly and in a timely manner to affected schools."

"We are heartbroken by the loss of two students due to rising flu cases," Prince George's County State's Attorney Aisha Braveboy said in a statement over the weekend. "Our thoughts are with their families and loved ones."

In response, Prince George's Public Schools have been encouraging students and parents to get the flu shot, as well as offering in-school clinics for the community.

According to the Maryland Department of Health, flu activity is "high," with 30 outbreaks reported and nearly 7,000 cases confirmed since October.
