Classes have been canceled for the rest of the week at Bowie State University as the community continues to reel from a Homecoming Weekend shooting. As of noon on Tuesday, Oct. 10, school officials say that all classes have been canceled for the remainder of the week "to allow additional time for our students, faculty, and staff to address mental distress." Local and state police are investigating a shooting at Bowie State University that left two people with gunshot wounds on Homecoming Weekend, authorities announced. At around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday night, troopers from the Maryland State Police College Park Barrack were called to assist Bowie State University with security during celebratory events, when gunshots rang out near the school's Center for Business and Graduate Studies building. Gunshots rang out on the Bowie State University campus early on Saturday morning, though no injuries were reported. officials say. Bowie State University and Maryland State police have launched an investigation after shots were reportedly fired in a parking lot behind the school’s James E. Proctor Building. The FBI announced that one minor is “believed to be responsible for the “majority of the threats" that have been targeting Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the country and throughout the region.
