Rockville Teen Tried As Adult For Shooting Classmate Feared Would 'Jump' Him: Police

A 17-year-old boy who claims to have accidentally shot a classmate he feared was going to fight him will be charged as an adult, authorities say.

Steven Alston said in reports he was fearful of his peer at Colonel Zadok Magruder High School, and accidentally pulled the trigger when the victim tried to disarm him around 1 p.m., Jan. 21, according to Montgomery County Police. 

The victim sustained serious injuries to the groin from the gunshot. Alston fled the scene and was found in a classroom in the school, where he was arrested. 

Alston stated in reports that he had feared the victim and was only trying to scare the victim and the victim's friends away from him when the shooting occurred. 

If convicted, Alston faces over 100 years in prison.
