Potomac Named 'Most Endangered River' In US After Massive Sewage Spill, Data Center Surge
The Potomac River — a critical drinking water source for millions across Maryland, Virginia, and DC — has been named the most endangered river in the United States after a massive sewage spill and growing concerns over data center development. A new report by American Rivers ranked it No. 1 on its 2026 list of the country’s most endangered rivers, citing sewage pollution and rapid development across the region. Another Potomac Sewage Spill Sends E. Coli Through The Roof, Officials Warn
Just days after a massive sewage overflow sent bacteria levels soaring along the Potomac River, DC Water says another overflow happened — but this one never reached the river. DC Water says the overflow was contained on-site by an earthen dam and trench …

WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said infrastructure plays a big role in whether residents can make eco-friendly choices. "If a state doesn't have a great infrastructure for alternative-fuel vehicles, it becomes much harder for r…

Pet owners are being advised to keep their animals away from parts of the Potomac River after potentially deadly algae mats were detected. An alert was issued by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources cautioning that the algae - which was collected from Williamsport to Riley Lock - could be harmful to animals if ingested. According to officials, "the algae has the appearance of mats of fine, green cotton and can be found along the shoreline, attached to rocks or plants, on the bottom or floating downstream." PET HEALTH ALERT: Algae mats detected in the Potomac Riv…
