It started with a mattress — and sent flames through the top floor.
A two-alarm fire caused nearly $1 million in damage, injured two Montgomery County firefighters, and displaced at least six families in Gaithersburg on Tuesday, July 1, officials said.
Fire crews responded around 10 a.m. to a three-story apartment building at 746 Quince Orchard Boulevard, near Rabbit Road in the Potomac Oaks community, according to MCFRS spokesperson Pete Piringer.

Nearly two dozen people are displaced after a massive garden apartment fire in Montgomery County, authorities say.
The two-alarm blaze was reported around 11 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 5 at the apartment building in the 2370 block of Glenmont Circle near Georgia Avenue, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue.
