Lives may have been saved early in the morning on Saturday, when officers on patrol in the area of E Church Street and Market Street reported hearing gunfire, leading to the arrest of 29-year-old Darryl Lee Cooke, Jr., who allegedly fired the shots.
The incident began at around 1:50 a.m. on Oct. 5, when the officers found two people suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were treated, hospitalized, and listed in stable condition as of Monday afternoon.
Due to the patrol officers' proximity to the scene, Cooke was quickly apprehended, and a firearm was recovered, according to a spokesperson for the Frederick Police Department.
Frederick Police Chief Jason Lando praised the officers' response after reviewing their body-cam footage, stating that the quick response may have saved lives.
"I was truly impressed by the quick and decisive actions of our officers," he said. "While patrolling the downtown business district, they heard gunfire and immediately began pursuing the suspect on foot.
"Thanks to their actions, the suspect was apprehended without further incident, and a firearm was recovered," Lando continued. "At the same time, other officers rendered critical first aid to the victims until EMS arrived.
"Their immediate intervention undoubtedly saved lives and prevented what could have been a far worse outcome."
The Frederick native has been charged with two counts of attempted murder after being taken to Frederick Health Hospital and later released.
Detectives continue to investigate the incident.
