Mia Love, a New York native who grew up in Connecticut, was 49 and had been battling brain cancer.
After moving west, she served as mayor of Saratoga Springs, Utah — about 30 miles outside Salt Lake City — from 2010 to 2014.
She was then elected to Congress in 2014 to represent Utah’s 4th District, becoming the first Black Republican woman elected to the House. She served two terms, beginning in 2015.
News of her death was announced by her family on social media late Sunday night, March 23.
"With grateful hearts filled to overflowing for the profound influence of Mia on our lives, we want you to know that she passed away peacefully today," the family's statement said. "She was in her home surrounded by family.
"In the midst of a celebration of her life and an avalanche of happy memories, Mia quietly slipped the bands of mortality, and, as her words and vision always did, soared heavenward.
"We are thankful for the many good wishes, prayers and condolences. We are taking some time as a family and will provide information about funeral services and a public celebration of her life in the days to come."
When she was a young girl, her family moved from Brooklyn to Norwalk, Connecticut.
After leaving Congress, Love became a contributor at CNN.
