A Maryland State Police helicopter proved critical in rescuing a group of kayakers who became stranded in rough waters in the Potomac River on Sunday afternoon. At around 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 6, Maryland State Police Aviation Command based out of Frederick came to the aid of four kayakers with an assist on the ground from Montgomery County swift water rescue personnel, officials say. First responders in Maryland came to the rescue of a group of swimmers who found themselves in a perilous position on Sunday afternoon, officials say. Ten people were removed from the Potomac River by crews in Montgomery County and Fairfax County after they were stranded on an island and their kayak went rogue and floated downstream. Pet owners are being advised to keep their animals away from parts of the Potomac River after potentially deadly algae mats were detected. A new alert was issued by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources cautioning that the algae - which was collected from Williamsport to Riley Lock - could be harmful to animals if ingested.
