Fuel Spill Inside DMV Tunnel After Tractor-Trailer Fire Prompts Hazmat Response (Photos) A tractor-trailer burst into flames inside a major Northwest DC tunnel early Tuesday morning, spilling diesel fuel and prompting a full hazmat response from firefighters, officials said. The fire broke out in the northbound lanes of the 3rd Street Tunnel near New York Avenue NW, where DC Fire and EMS crews rushed in just before 7 a.m. to find the cab of an 18-wheeler fully involved. Firefighters quickly escalated the response, calling for additional units and hazmat crews as they worked to establish a water supply inside the tunnel and contain the fire. Traffic Tied Up By Vehicle Fire On I-270 In Maryland (Photos) Some northbound lanes of I-270 were blocked on Monday afternoon in Montgomery County while crews battled a truck fire.
