A Maryland highway worker was struck and killed on the Capital Beltway just one day after the state marked the end of Work Zone Safety Week, prompting outrage from his union and renewed calls for drivers to slow down. Robert W. Dempsey, 40, of Ellicott City, was killed shortly before noon on Saturday, April 25, while working along the Inner Loop near Route 414 in Forestville, Maryland State Police said. A Maryland deputy narrowly escaped serious injury when an allegedly drunk and speeding driver slammed into his cruiser during a routine traffic stop — and it was all caught on camera, police said.
