Nearly 200 children were adopted in an annual adoption event held in Washington, D.C., reports WTOP. The D.C. Family and Superior Courts held their 36th annual Adoption Day on Saturday, Nov. 19, with 174 children finding a new place to call home with a loving family. Maryland Student Test Scores Alarm Educators, Majority Fall Below Basic Achievement In Math
Maryland student scores followed a national declining trend on the 2022 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), continuing a downward trend that began in 2013 and worsened during the pandemic. The NAEP is a biennial assessment of fourth and eight graders for the subjects of reading and math. It measures achievement at four levels: below basic, basic, proficient, and advanced. Four "Streeteries" in Montgomery County are being reevaluated for fall as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to ease, officials say. The Streeteries were created in early 2020 by the county as a temporary concept to support businesses struggling from the economic impact of the pandemic. Health officials are warning of an increase in melatonin poisoning among children. Over the past decade, the number of pediatric ingestions of melatonin rose 530%, with more than 260,000 ingestions reported between 2012 and 2021, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Melatonin became the most frequently ingested substance among kids reported to national poison control centers in 2020, the CDC said. Jeff Bezos' ex-wife MacKenzie Scott— a philanthropist and novelist— has donated $1.5 million to an organization based in central Pennsylvania, according to a release by the recipient.
