Police responded to a call of a woman hanging from a building in the 4500 block of Connecticut Avenue Northwest just after 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, Commander Duncan Bedlion said.
Upon arrival, officers found the woman suffering from significant injuries and she was taken to a local hospital for treatment, Bedlion said. She was listed as in stable but critical condition.
Initial investigation showed a rope was tied around the woman's legs while she was hanging from the side of the building. Investigators are unsure if the woman's fall was voluntary, Bedlion said.
One suspect, who appeared distraught on the scene, was taken into police custody.
Around the same time, police found a missing child who was "a common child" between the victim and the suspect from this incident. The one-and-a-half-year-old was reported missing earlier in the night but was found a short time after.
Police also uncovered a firearm in the building but are unsure if the gun is related to this incident as there was no evidence of gunshots found during the investigation.
Various reptiles were also recovered, including turtles, that were later turned over to the Humane Rescue Alliance, WUSA reports. It is unclear if the reptiles are relevant to the incident, Bedlion said.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 202-727-9099.
